Wood Study

Wood Design · Roberts Design Studio

Context

Independent studio of one. Brand, packaging, and interfaces designed directly in code: no mockup phase, no handoff, no translation loss between the idea and the shipped thing. The bet is that taste plus production speed beats headcount, and every project in the studio doubles as evidence for the method.

Role

Self-assigned research with one question behind it: if the file is the artifact and the chisel is a router, what does craft mean? The machine executes exactly what the file says, which does not remove judgment, it relocates it. The study was to find where that judgment now lives.

Case Study

Modeled the form, planned the toolpaths against the grain direction rather than over it, and cut the joinery to tolerance so it assembles without fillers. Ran the CNC, kept the tool marks where they tell the truth about the process, and finished by hand with hardwax oil. The same studio method as the screen work, design directly in the final medium, applied to a material that pushes back: wood moves, grain has opinions, and the file has to respect both.

Notes

CNC pathing planned against the grain direction, not over it. Joinery cut to tolerance, assembled without fillers. Form follows the file, not the chisel. Finished with hardwax oil for matte clarity.
